Dr. Epperson is expanding existing programs and launching new initiatives within the growing Department and through clinical, research and training collaborations across the Anschutz Medical Campus.

Position Summary:

The Department of Psychiatry collaborates closely with a broad range of clinical departments at the University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) to provide integrated behavioral health care in primary and specialty medical settings. We are also establishing new integrated behavioral health services in additional specialty medical practices across the hospital. Our Department is committed to recruiting several health psychologists with competencies to provide interprofessional program development, clinical services and outcomes assessment in at least one of the following outpatient integrated specialty settings:
  • Neurosurgery: Pre-surgical evaluations for neuromodulation for adults with facial pain.
  • Neurology: Psychosocial and behavioral care of outpatients with headaches, seizure disorders, TBI/Concussions, multiple sclerosis and other chronic neurological and neurodegenerative disorders.
  • Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine: Care of outpatients with a range of pulmonary conditions including COVID-19.
  • Sleep Medicine: Cognitive Behavioral approaches to sleep disorders in adults across the life span.
  • Endocrinology/Diabetes Service: Psychosocial and behavioral care of outpatients with diabetes and other chronic endocrine disorders.

Health psychologists recruited for these positions will become part of the Department of Psychiatry's growing and dynamic Adult Division. This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Instructor, Senior Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor based on experience and qualifications as indicated below.

Responsibilities may include:
  • Develop evidence-based, integrated behavioral health programs in the specialty setting(s) using best practice models.
  • Develop goals and objectives for the services and programs and all associated practice management duties.
  • Develop and implement a programmatic evaluation plan including patient and provider benchmarks.
  • Participate in specialty setting quality and performance assessment projects.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the special needs of all patients, families and colleagues with respect to race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, gender, gender identity, ability status, religion, political beliefs, socioeconomic status and any other factors related to systemic oppression.
  • Provide the full range of psychological assessments, psychosocial & behavioral interventions (e.g., individual, group), and education to patients seen in these specialty settings.
  • For health psychologists working with neurosurgery, conduct presurgical screening and psychological assessment for patients considering neuromodulation for facial pain.
  • Provide education for family members and the specialty setting team regarding the psychosocial status of patients.
  • Consultation and collaboration with interprofessional team members in specialty settings and other clinical departments to develop intervention strategies related to physical and psychosocial challenges.
  • Actively participate in treatment and follow-up planning for patients and families.
  • Chart patient visits using an electronic medical record.
  • Triage and refer patients as needed to collaborating colleagues across disciplines, Departments and communities.
  • Participate in training Department of Psychiatry Post-Doctoral Fellows in Clinical Health Psychology as well as Residents and Fellows in the specialty clinical Departments.

Supervision Received

Health Psychologists hired into these roles will report to the Director of Integrated Care, Adult Division, Department of Psychiatry. Supervision and mentorship will also be available from other senior health psychologists in the Department.

Supervision Exercised

Health Psychologists in this position may supervise Department of Psychiatry Post-Doctoral Fellows in Clinical Health Psychology and other behavioral health trainees.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at:

Instructor: $90,000 to $105,000.

Senior Instructor: $90,000 to $105,000.

Assistant Professor: $90,000 to $105,000.

Associate Professor: $113,000 to $130,000.

Professor: $162,000 to $200,000.

This information represents the 25-50 percentile of the salary range which is reflective of a candidate with 1-7 years of experience. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain credentialing through the University of Colorado Health system.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Training and experience in integrated specialty care including inpatient or outpatient behavioral medicine and/or CL services.
  • Experience on integrated teams in specialty medical settings that promotes an inclusive environment.
  • Training and experience in CBT and CBT-I for sleep disorders.
  • Post-doctoral fellowship in health psychology, and ABPP board certified or board eligible in health psychology.
  • Knowledge of the impact of trauma and the interplay of trauma with medical and neurological disease.
  • Interest in developing a collaborative program of research in specialty medical settings, although research interest is not required for this position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team model and with diverse colleagues, medical specialists, and trainees across disciplines.
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.
