Job Summary:
Nature of Work:
The University of Colorado, College of Nursing, is seeking a Medical Assistant for a 1.0 FTE, benefits-eligible position at Sheridan Health Services (SHS), a Federally Qualified Health Center located in southwest Denver, CO 80236. These positions will primarily provide quality care to patients at the Family Health Clinic site & may be asked to see patients at the Youth Health Clinic as well. Applicants should be educated & trained as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), or Medical Assistants (MAs).

Clinic Description:
Sheridan Health Services is a multi-site, nurse-managed federally qualified community health center, funded through the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) Bureau of Primary Healthcare; & is a collaborative effort between the College of Nursing & the Sheridan School District. There are now ~75 employees at three convenient locations to serve community health needs primarily for residents of Arapahoe, Denver, Douglas, & Jefferson counties. A Youth Health Clinic is located in the Sheridan School District Administration building. The Family Health Clinic at Sheridan Campus is located in southwest Denver on the Fort Logan campus & provides services to adults & children, 65% of whom identify as Latinx, & 42% of whom are best served in another language, with Spanish being the predominant second language.
Services offered include primary care across the lifespan; prenatal & postpartum, gynecology, dentistry, pharmacy, behavioral health, & outpatient substance abuse treatment. Sheridan Health Services is a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH), & as such we uphold a model of care that places the patient at the center, incorporating the values & beliefs of the patient in all decision-making. Examples of Work Performed:
Direct Patient Care: 80% / Administrative Functions: 20%
- Upholds strict compliance with University and professional policies/procedures.
- Follows CDC guidelines for reporting illness and temperature, wearing masks and washing hands and more during flu seasons and pandemics.
- May work with both Pediatric, OBand Adult populations; flexes between clinics as staffing warrants.
- Speaks Spanish and English on a daily basis, communicating clinical terminology to patients and colleagues.
- Works until 8 pm on designated extended hours shifts as needed.
- Greets patients and families and completes standard patient check-in procedures in person and using Telehealth tools.
- Measures and documents vital signs; notifies the provider of abnormal values.
- Completes Medication Reconciliation in EHR.
- Records patient interview, history, and chief complaint in EHR.
- Prepares patients for examinations and procedures as needed and assists providers with procedures as needed.
- Performs phlebotomy following lab procedure for the proper collection and handling of other lab specimens.
- Performs basic wound care and first aid within scope.
- Provides patient education concerning office policies, lab results medications, diagnoses, treatment, plan of care, and follow-up phone calls.
- Prepares, administers, and electronically documents medications within scope (i.e.Depo-Provera) with provider authorization.
- Administers immunizations, maintains immunization records, and completes annual immunization training within the timeline set by the supervisor.
- Assists with clerical and administrative duties proactively and as needed, including covering front desk/reception and answering overflow incoming calls.
- Answers phone and schedules appointments, electronically faxes and uploads records, outside reports, and orders.
- Assist the MA team with inventory-taking, stocking, and sterilizing instruments.
- Maintains CPR certification and uses CPR skills, when required.
- Maintains and disposes of biohazard waste according to OSHA standards.
- Practices OSHA safety standards.
- Performs accurate, legal, and ethical documentation (electronic/hard copy) at all times.
- Assists with reporting test results to state and federal agencies, as appropriate.
- Communicates with community partners as needed including public health agencies, specialty/outside provider offices, local hospitals, and free-standing healthcare facilities.
Performs additional miscellaneous job duties as assigned
Colorado Refugee Screening Program (CRSP) Related Duties:
- Utilizes live interpreters, & video or telephone interpreter services to assist with patient registration, collecting a health history, completing screening questionnaires, & other aspects of the Domestic Medical Exam (DME) visits
- Works with CRSP Providers to ensure immunization records are up to date, identify gaps in DME Health requirements, & connect patients with mental health screening, dental screening, & referral coordination
- Practices cultural responsiveness & respect for all cultures, beliefs, & customs.
- Completes blood work & vaccine administration on both Adult & Pediatric populations per best practices for Refugee Domestic Medical Exams
- Assists Patient Navigators in communicating follow-up plans for patients, including medication administration teaching, next appointment, & referral information
- Assists Patient Navigators in processing referrals, connecting with community resources, & preparing patient data for RedCAP reporting

Qualifications:
Medical Assistant I
- Completion of an accredited medical assistant program.
Medical Assistant II
- Completion of an accredited medical assistant program.
- One year of experience working as a medical assistant.
Substitutions:
Medical Assistant
- One year of medical assistant experience may substitute for completion of an accredited program and is in addition to any required years of experience.
Nursing Aide / Licensed Practical Nurse / Emergency Medical Technician
- Completion of an accredited program, Colorado state licensure, and years of experience in any of these fields may substitute for medical assistant-specific requirements.
Current Registered Nursing Student
- Colorado State Certified Nurse Aid licensure may substitute for completion of an accredited medical assistant program
- Completion of Medical/Surgical Nursing I course with a passing grade may substitute for completion of an accredited medical assistant program
Registered Nurse / Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) / Doctor of Medicine (MD)

Conditions of Employment:
- Must be willing and able to obtain current BLS/CPR certification by date of hire.

- Experience working in a Federally Qualified Health Center &/or Patient-Centered Medical Home environment.
- Experience utilizing bilingual language skills in a professional setting (i.e. Arabic, Spanish, Ukrainian, Dari, Farsi, &/or French).
Preferred Qualifications - Medical Assistant II:
- Experience with or formal training in retrieving imaging studies, & querying patient record databases (i.e. COHRIO, or similar).
- Experience with injections, vaccine administration, & documentation.
- Experience training new hires.
- Experience with or formal training in phlebotomy & point-of-care testing.
- Experience with or formal training in working with a population/subpopulation related to the job (pediatric, OB-GYN, geriatric; refugees, or others).
- Experience utilizing bilingual language skills in a professional setting (i.e. Arabic, Spanish, Ukrainian, Dari, Farsi, &/or French).

Anticipated Pay Range:
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as:
Medical Assistant I: $41,600 to $43,680
Medical Assistant II: $43,680 to $45,760
The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith & reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
