Position Summary:
This tenure track assistant or tenure track or tenured associate professor will focus on Forest Health in support of undergraduate and graduate programs in the Department of Forest, Rangeland and Fire Sciences, and College of Natural Resources. Rank and tenure are negotiable based on how the candidate meets the criteria outlined in the college bylaws. The faculty member will teach two undergraduate courses and lead a graduate course in their field of expertise (total of approximately nine credit hours per academic year). Course content will support both program and university student learning outcomes. Specific courses will be focused on forest health and determined in consultation with the department head. The faculty member will actively and effectively advise undergraduate students and will actively recruit and effectively mentor graduate students and post-doctoral researchers. The faculty member will conduct research related to forest health, and will develop a strong, internationally recognized, externally funded research program focused on biotic threats to forest health. This includes, but is not limited to, impacts of environmental factors on host-pest/pathogen relationships, threats posed by natural and introduced agents to forests and species of conservation concern, and innovative approaches to monitoring and managing forest health. The faculty member will publish in peer-reviewed journals, present findings to scientists and managers at professional conferences, and actively seek external competitive funding to support this research. The faculty member will work collaboratively within the department, college and university, as well as with external stakeholders (e.g., government and nongovernmental organizations, other universities, and industries). In these and other ways, the faculty member will develop and maintain a nationally and internationally recognized research and outreach program. The faculty member will also be effective in both outreach and engagement, particularly in linking research activities with outreach activities that help contribute to the land grant mission of the university. Thus, the faculty member participates in site visits, presentations to public and professional audiences, short courses and workshops, web-based communication, grant and manuscript reviews, and written impact statements that translate research findings to a large and diverse audience.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in forest health related field such as forest science, entomology, plant or forest pathology, natural resources.
  • Must hold rank of tenure track associate to qualify for rank of tenure track associate professor.
  • Must hold rank of tenured associate professor to qualify for rank of tenured associate faculty.
  • Experience with biotic agents affecting forest health, with an emphasis on entomology, pathology, and/or invasive plants.
  • Experience with forest health issues and challenges with respect to both private and public lands.
  • Experience publishing research in peer-reviewed publications.
  • Experience teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Experience communicating verbally and in writing.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in delivering high-quality undergraduate education relevant to the needs of the Forestry program, the Department, and College.
  • Experience securing external competitive funding.
  • Demonstrated commitment to work with students, faculty, and external groups from various backgrounds.
  • Experience advising undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Experience teaching and developing course material for both classroom and online settings.
  • Experience in mentoring graduate students.
  • Experience in securing external competitive funding.
  • Experience with the role of research, teaching, and extension at a land grant institution.
  • Experience working with students, faculty, and external groups from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience in understanding forest health issues and challenges concerning both private and public lands.
  • Interpersonal skills for effective interaction with colleagues, land managers and owners, and others interested in managing sustainable forest ecosystems.
  • Experience working collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders in team-based research and educational programs.
