Job Description:
The Medical Billing Specialist supports Health Care and Counseling at The Barnes Center at The Arch, ensuring all components of the revenue cycle are operating efficiently. This position will prepare, scrub and submit claims, research accounts receivable, resolve insurance denials/rejections, work with campus partners including the Bursar's Office, Cash Operations, the Budget Manager to provide information for deposits, credits and adjustments, management of accounts receivable, among others.

Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and submit billing claims to participating insurance companies, scrubbing claims for accurate information, researching accounts receivable, following up with insurance companies for payment, and resolving insurance denials/rejections.
  • Post payments received via paper check, electronic fund transfer, credit card, cash etc into a practice management software.
  • Work closely with campus financial partners including the Bursar's Office, Cash Operations, the Budget Manager to provide all information needed for deposits, co-pay collection, credits and adjustments, management of accounts receivable etc.
  • Work closely with providers, third party clearinghouses and insurance companies to ensure all credentialing and enrollments are current.
  • Prepare reports requested by Barnes Center leadership, including reports to be used by the Quality Improvement committee and/or for compliance or auditing purposes.
  • Provide timely and accurate education to clinical and clerical staff related to health insurance, medical billing and coding guidelines, use of the credit card machine etc.
  • Manage updates to the fee schedule, and work closely with the Application Specialist on implementing any billing related workflow changes in the electronic medical record/ practice management software.
  • Communicate with students to respond to any questions they may have about their medical bills via phone, email or in person. This will also include several presentations for newly arriving students to help them understand medical billing at Syracuse University.
  • Provide medical reception support, including collecting insurance information and checking patients in, answering phone calls, and scheduling appointments.
