Job Description:
Postdoc Research Associate - Nano Optics and Advanced Health Sensing

(Heterogeneous integration of transparent conductive oxides with silicon photonics)

What We Are Looking For

The Nano-Optics and Advanced Health-Sensing (NOAHS) Lab at Baylor University is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on heterogeneous integration of transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) with silicon photonics, which will be primarily funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) Partnerships for Innovation (PFI) grant. The Postdoc Research Associate will collaborate with Intel Corp. and other silicon photonics companies for the development of ultra-low voltage, high bandwidth silicon photonic modulators driven by TCO materials. This project will seek technology transfer and commercialization and the postdoc will have the opportunity to participate the NSF i-Corp training program to develop essential skills for startup companies. The position is renewable for two or more years based on performance and availability of continued funding.

The NOAHS Lab is led by Prof. Alan Wang (alan_wang@baylor.edu), who is the Mearse Endowed Chair Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. During his research career, Prof. Wang has raised over $10 M dollars in externally funded research from the NSF, AFOSR, DARPA, NIH, NASA and Army Research Office, along with industry sponsors such as Intel and Hewlett Packard. He has more than 120 journal publications and 120 conference presentations including 18 plenary/invited presentations. He also holds eight granted or pending U.S. patents. Prof. Wang is a fellow member of SPIE and senior member of Optica and IEEE.

Minimum Required Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a closely related field.
  • Strong background in optics/photonics and solid-state physics.
  • Research experience with integrated photonics, silicon photonics, cleanroom fabrication, and optical device characterization.

What You Will Do
  • Design of high-speed optical modulators that will be fabricated by commercial silicon photonic integrated circuit foundries.
  • Fabricate silicon-TCO photonic devices and subsystems using electron beam lithography, sputtering, etching, atomic layer deposition, and evaporation.
  • Characterization of high-speed optoelectronic devices using vector network analyzer, arbitrary wave generator and digital communication analyzer.
  • Mentor PhD students, collaborate with industrial partners, and reach out to potential customers.
  • Participate in the preparation and writing of journal manuscripts, and presentations at conferences and/or posters.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned to support Baylor's mission
  • Ability to comply with University policies
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance
