Job Summary:
Nature of Work:
The Department of Pathology employs ~150 faculty, including 4.5 FTE pathologists at HRH. We seek an experienced anatomic and clinical pathologist (Instructor to Clinical Associate Professor), to lead other pathologists and serve as CLIA/CAP Medical Director of the HRH Laboratory. Candidates with high volume clinical experience of at least 5 years, experience in laboratory leadership, management, compliance, and strong communication/interpersonal skills will be favored. Candidates currently in private/community settings as well as AP/CP active academic positions are encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate must be able to perform both high volume complex frozen sections and rapid on-site performance (of palpable lesions) as well as evaluation of fine needle aspirations, although other pathologists in the group are board certified in cytology and will oversee the Anatomic Pathology/Frozen section service. Faculty cover the practice Monday-Friday on site, as well as nights and weekends for emergencies and consultations. Three Pathologist Assistants (PAs) and one cytotechnologist are on site to assist with procedures. Gross examinations and sectioning of samples, frozen section processing are performed by experienced PAs under the supervision of a pathologist. Timely consultations with subspecialty experts at the University of Colorado are provided on an as needed basis. Immunohistochemical stains are performed on site with 24-hour turnaround time for most biopsy cases. Pathologists and the laboratory are backed up by subspecialty pathologists at UCH, connected by digital imaging as well as daily courier services.
Employment expectations:
Complex High Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Practice, Administrative/Leadership Service
This position requires day-to-day clinical, leadership and administrative duties in both anatomic and clinical pathology including:
- Oversight of quality assurance/quality management/quality improvement programs
- Advocate for appropriate laboratory test utilization and send-out testing orders
- Ensure compliance with regulatory agency requirements, including maintenance of College of American Pathologists laboratory accreditation
- Policy and procedure review and appraisal
- Coordinated leadership/management with the Department of Pathology (Vice Chairs of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Chair),
- Coordinated leadership of Pathologists and clinical practice with HRH Technical Lab Director, HRH administration and the UCHealth Clinical Laboratory Service Line Committee, in regards to UCHealth system lab projects, clinical quality, productivity, financial metrics, billing, capital expenditure, and management
- Consult with HRH providers and patients, in regards to medical care, laboratory test selection and result interpretation.
- Independent case review and interpretation in both Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.
- Review and sign-out of surgical pathology and cytology specimens
- Supervise PAs and cytotechnologist
- Consult with UCH pathologists as necessary for complex or non-routine cases. Depending on staffing and case complexity, provide authorization for send outs and specialized testing not available at HRH
- Participate in multidisciplinary tumor board conferences involving HRH patients.
- Participate in hospital committees as assigned.
- Work with hospital administration and the Department of Quality and Risk Management for continuous quality improvement.
Education and scholarly activities
- Resource for and oversight of laboratory staff training and educating HRH medical staff
- Continued education including attendance at national annual meetings, such as CAP and ASCP.
- Opportunities to participate in numerous academic conferences will be provided via digital, telephone and web-based technologies.
- Opportunities to participate in translational research, QI and QC programs of the department are envisioned.
- Opportunities to lecture to pathology residents if desired.
Academic Administrative Activities
- Participation in departmental, school, and professional committees is rare
- Participation in CU Medicine interdisciplinary and disciplinary clinical conferences related to pathology are rare but may be required in some subspecialty areas
- Teaching of residents and fellows at a distance is encouraged, rare and voluntary. Research and scholarship are not required.
Additional Responsibilities
- Active participation on the HRH Medical Executive Committee and Patient Safety and Quality Committee.
- Attend HRH medical staff meetings

Attending pathologists oversee or perform ~ 500,000 clinical and ~12,000 anatomic pathology tests annually, including ~500 frozen sections, ~9,000 surgical pathology and 1,200 cytology cases (including fine needle aspiration biopsies) per year. The HRH Laboratory performs low, medium and high complexity testing to support HRH patients and 12 affiliated outpatient clinics, ambulatory surgery centers and the Lone Tree Health Center. Our NAPBC accredited breast center and HRH's commitment to medical and surgical oncology care drive a high volume of cancer resection cases (higher than is typically seen in a community setting). Instructor minimum qualifications
- MD or DO degree, completed residency in pathology with board certification in both anatomic and clinical pathology. At least 5 years of experience practicing pathology full time as anatomic and clinical pathologist, preferably in complex community hospital (level 3 and above) or academic medical center. Candidates with subspecialty expertise garnered through fellowship or significant experience preferred.
Senior Instructor, minimum qualifications.
- MD or DO degree, completed residency in pathology with board certification in both anatomic and clinical pathology. At least 10 years of experience in complex hospital based setting, at least level 3, with managerial experience leading pathology group, medical staff and personnel. Candidates must also have subspecialty expertise in one or more areas of anatomic pathology garnered through fellowship or significant high volume high complexity practice.
Desired Qualifications:
- Fellowship sub-specialization and if relevant, additional board certifications beyond AP/CP
- Experience in laboratory leadership and oversight, laboratory accreditation reviews and quality/productivity analysis is preferred.

Anticipated Pay Range:
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:
$400,000 - $510,000
