Job Description Summary
The Primary Care Service at Penn Vet is focused on teaching veterinary students valuable surgical and clinical skills with relation to general practice veterinary medicine.
Job Description
Surgery Responsibilities:
- Surgical Support: Assist in maintaining smooth surgical flow for a busy clinic with an average of 15 patients per day. This includes pre-medicating, inducing, intubating, monitoring, and recovering patients.
- Anesthesia Monitoring: Monitor anesthesia with a clear understanding of normal and abnormal conditions, ensuring patient safety and comfort. Ability to trouble shoot anesthesia machines and monitors.
- Venipuncture: Utilize strong venipuncture skills to facilitate blood draws and IV catheter placements.
- Record Keeping: Ensure prompt and accurate completion of paperwork and maintenance of patient records.
- Behavior Awareness: Be familiar with animal behavior, including signs of fear and stress, and practice fear-free handling techniques.
- Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with the Primary Care Surgeon, Nurse Coordinator, and students to provide optimal care.
- Learning and Adaptability: Identify personal limitations and seek help as needed, demonstrating a willingness to learn and adapt.
- Emergency Response: Respond appropriately and effectively during emergencies, ensuring the safety and well-being of patients.
Nursing Responsibilities (Primary Care Clinic)
- Work collaboratively with interns and 4th year veterinary students while instructing them on proper restraint techniques and nursing skills such as venipuncture, cystocentesis, and vaccine/subcutaneous medication administration.
- Sedation of patients when required.
- Instruct and assist 4th year veterinary students on basic skills like nail trims, anal gland expression, collection of ear and skin cytology samples and staining slides.
- Draw up vaccinations as needed for each patient
- Check phone messages on Primary Care Service phone line. Return phone calls as indicated or relay message to student or clinician on the case.
- Manage prescription refill requests. Reference patient record and notify clinician of prescription request. Once authorized by clinician, call client to notify him/her of the status of the prescription.
Qualifications:
- Must be a CVT/LVT/RVT with 3 years' experience in general practice. with anesthesia is required.
- Prior experience in a veterinary clinic or surgical setting is preferred. HQHVSN experience is a plus.
- Strong multitasking abilities, excellent communication and organizational skills, and the capability to take direction, initiate tasks and make contributions to the team.
- Positive and motivating demeanor, with a commitment to working well in a fast-paced environment.
Veterinary Technician C: CVT and 3-5 years of experience
Veterinary Technician D: CVT and 5-8 years of experience
Veterinary Technician E: CVT and 8 + years of experience
Minimum starting salaries increase with each level. Relevant education, experience, skills, and licenses/ certifications are among the factors considered in salary offers.
