Assistant Director of Student Health And Counseling

Description
Under the direction of the Student Health and Counseling Services Director, this position will lead a team of mental health professionals including licensed counselors and a clinical case manager, providing clinical and administrative oversight of counseling services as well as providing psychosocial counseling support services to a diverse student population through individual and group counseling, outreach programming, and crisis intervention. This position will provide clinical supervision for staff working towards licensure. This position will provide annual evaluation for all counselors and clinical case manager. This individual will have earned appropriate clinical degrees from accredited programs and is licensed to practice and provide supervision in the State of Tennessee. If the director is unavailable, this position will temporarily assume responsibilities for day-to-day operations of Student Health and Counseling.

Responsibilities

Administrative/Personnel Duties:
Under direction of the Director of Student Health and Counseling Director:
1. Supervise, evaluate, and oversee the training of staff counselors and clinical case manager
2. Serve as a mentor for junior staff members working towards licensure and new hires
3. Provide clinical supervision for current staff working towards licensure according to state and licensure regulations
4. Evaluate staff annually per the university policy
5. Complete 6-month provisional reviews for new hires
6. Identify and initiate new programs as appropriate in conjunction with UTM partners or other community stakeholders
7. Develop, review, and implement policies, procedures, and processes as needed
8. Promote a healthy and productive work environment conducive to staff well-being
9. Ensure professional development opportunities to maintain a high level of staff excellence and proficiency with industry standards and best practices
10. Implement evaluation and assessment on a recurring basis that allow for continuous quality improvement in systems and care outcomes, and to support the collection of data to facilitate reporting to accreditation
11. Manage requests for continuing education for employees within constraints of the budget.

Individual/Group Counseling:
1. See a reduced caseload of ongoing and new clients as needed
2. Provide short-term, solution-focused individual, couple, and group counseling to students
3. Demonstrate interpersonal communication and rapport building with each encounter
4. Conduct and interpret mental health assessments; assess individuals for mental, emotional, or substance abuse problems, including abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and/or other drugs
5. Develop treatment plans and manage crisis in accordance with assessment needs
6. Coordinate referrals for clients with significant mental health issues or needing long-term support to local community resources, following through to ensure service efficacy
7. Make appropriate referrals to campus resources and services to promote student's academic success
8. Schedule patient flow to clinic based on predetermined appointment arrangements to allow the clinic to efficiently and effectively serve an optimal number of clients
9. Document client and treatment interventions in accordance with ACA Code of Ethics
10. Participate as a member of the Student Affairs Response Team at designated times.

Campus/External Relations:
In collaboration with the Wellness Educator and Director of SHCS:
1. Plan and implement preventative and educational programs related to mental health
2. Engage campus and community providers/organizations to enrich the educational environment and experiences of students
3. Actively support and contribute to UTM's strategic plan and mission to create an inclusive and supportive campus culture for students of diverse identities
4. Serve on CARE Team and university committees as an authority on mental health
5. Provide educational outreach when warranted in coordination with Wellness Educator and/or Clinical Case Manager.

Crisis Intervention:
1. Available to coordinate mental health crisis response and intervention services for UTM in coordination with the Clinical Case Manager/Counselors and communicate these procedures to other university units so that students are served with expediency
2. Provide information and referral support services to students, faculty, and/or staff as needed
3. Collaborate with the CARE Team as needed and appropriate to support students in crisis and those who are exhibiting safety concerns
4. Engage with area mental health service providers, such as hospitals, in-patient psychiatric hospitals/clinics, psychiatrists and other clinicians, to create a network of referrals for university students as needed.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
1. Master's degree
2. Licensed as a Clinical Social Worker with supervision capabilities
3. Minimum 5 years of post-master's degree experience as a licensed clinician
4. Experience providing crisis management
5. Experience managing personnel and other resources
6. Excellent interpersonal communication skills, ability to build and maintain a diverse team of staff (relationship building), ability to make decisions in emergency and crisis management.
7. Serve as coach and mentor.
8. Decisions for care are made according to state law and legal scope of practice, collaborations and consultation with other providers, standing institutional policies and procedures, the American Counseling Association code of ethics & other helping professions' codes of ethics, and within System, State, and Federal guidelines and standards.
9. Ability and knowledge to perform mental health care at the advanced practice level and serve as a supervisor for those seeking licensure.
10. Skills to obtain mental health histories, interpret diagnostic tests, other treatments and document as appropriate.
11. Experience designing and implementing assessment methods to evaluate ongoing programs and services.
12. Experience working with a multidisciplinary team and collaborating with other professionals (ie. Student Affairs, Residential Life, healthcare providers).

Preferred Qualifications
1. Prior clinical experience in a university-based health and counseling setting
2. Experience supervising staff working towards licensure
3. Experience working as a senior counselor
4. Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Ability:
5. Able to manage, direct and motivate a team of individuals to provide quality mental health care services in a university setting.
6. Demonstrate knowledge of mental health concerns of university students, student development theory, and university counseling best practices.
